My horse tries to kick me when lunging. It can be scary.

Your horse is very disrespectful. I would recommend using a lunge whip to keep space between you and the horse. Making him work harder when he kicks out is the technique that I use. If you stop working with him because he scares you, he wins. It would be a good idea to enlist the help of an experienced horse person to help you get through this issue.
